Discord Server Themes and Aesthetics: Banners, Role Colors and a Consistent Look

TL;DR

Pick a small visual system first (a few colors, one icon style, one naming pattern) and apply it everywhere. Banners need Boost Level 2 (animated: Level 3) and Discord recommends at least 960x540 in 16:9. Custom role icons need Level 2.

1

Start with a small visual system

A consistent server look comes from a few decisions you make once and then apply everywhere, not from adding more decoration. Write them down before you touch any settings: a short color palette (one main color, one or two supporting colors, one accent), one style for icons and custom emoji, and one pattern for channel and role names.

The same rules then drive every visible element: the server icon, the banner, role colors, bot embed colors, custom emoji and the way channels are named. When a moderator or a new admin adds something later, they can check it against the written rules instead of guessing.

Match the style to the community. A study group or a professional network usually reads better with a calm palette and plain channel names. A gaming or art community can use louder colors and more playful names. What matters more than the style itself is that it stays the same across the whole server.

2

What you can customize at each boost level

Some visual options are free and some depend on Server Boosts. According to Discord's Server Boosting FAQ, Level 1 (2 Boosts) adds an animated server icon, a custom server invite background and raises emoji slots to 100 in total. Level 2 (7 Boosts) adds a static server banner and custom role icons and raises emoji slots to 150. Level 3 (14 Boosts) adds an animated server banner and raises emoji slots to 250.

Discord also lists additional perks that are bought separately with Boosts, independent of the level. Enhanced Role Styles cost 3 Boosts and give roles animated gradient and holographic effects instead of solid colors. Discord says it is also testing Server Themes with select servers, a perk that lets admins set a custom color theme for the server.

If your server loses a level, Discord keeps the level perks for a grace period of 72 hours. After that, perks such as the banner and extra emoji become inactive until the level is regained. Additional perks like Enhanced Role Styles switch off immediately when their Boosts are removed. Plan your design so the server still looks finished without the boosted extras. For more detail on boosting, see the server boost guide.

Role colors and role icons

Role colors are one of the most visible parts of a theme. Use your palette here: stronger colors for staff roles, calmer tones for general member roles, and avoid many similar bright colors that are hard to tell apart. Check every role color against both the dark and the light Discord theme, since a color that reads well on one can be hard to read on the other.

Custom role icons are a Level 2 perk. Discord's requirements are an image of 64x64 pixels with a maximum size of 256 KB, or a default or custom emoji from your server. Only one icon is shown next to a name in chat: the icon of the member's highest role that has one. Discord also notes that role icons show in cozy mode but not in compact mode, so do not rely on the icon alone to tell roles apart.

If you generate a server with the BuildMyDiscord AI builder, the AI is instructed to give each role a color and the builder applies those colors when it creates the roles. Treat them as a starting point and adjust them to your own palette. The roles and permissions guide covers how to order the roles themselves.

5

Keep bots, emoji and names consistent

Bot messages are part of the look. Set the same embed color and footer style for welcome messages, announcements and moderation notices, so automated posts match the rest of the server instead of looking like they come from different places.

Custom emoji and stickers carry the theme into conversations. Keep one drawing style across the set. The emoji management guide covers slots and organization.

For channel and role names, choose one pattern and keep it: for example always lowercase with hyphens, or always one emoji in front of the name. Mixed patterns make a server look unfinished faster than any color choice.

6

Changing the theme later

You can refresh the look for a season or an event, but keep the core elements, such as the icon and main color, stable so members still recognize the server. Announce bigger changes before you make them.

Keep your written visual rules up to date whenever you change something, so the next person who edits the server applies the new version and not the old one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Discord recommends an image or GIF of at least 960x540 pixels in a 16:9 aspect ratio. A 1920x1080 image is resized automatically. The same size is recommended for animated banners.

According to Discord, the static banner requires Boost Level 2 and the animated banner Level 3. Discord Partner servers get the banner without boosting.

Discord keeps level perks for a grace period of 72 hours. After that they become inactive until the level is regained. If a server drops from Level 3 to Level 2, the animated banner becomes static using the same image.

There is no official number. A small palette with one main color, one or two supporting colors and one accent is easier to keep consistent than a large one. Check each color in both the dark and the light Discord theme.

Role icons are a Level 2 perk. Discord requires an image of 64x64 pixels with a maximum size of 256 KB, or you can use a default or custom emoji from your server. Animated icons are not supported.
