A server name can be 2 to 100 characters. If you ever want Discovery, it must describe the server accurately and contain no profanity. A custom invite link (Boost Level 3) allows up to 25 lowercase letters, numbers or dashes and may already be taken. Pick a name that says what the server is about, test it out loud and with a search, and change it later in Server Settings if needed.
What a server name has to do
People see your server name before they join: in invites, on the server profile and in Discord's discovery surfaces. Discord's own help article calls the name the server's identity and the first thing people see, and advises making it clear, memorable and representative of what the server is about.
In practice that means one job above all: someone who reads only the name should roughly know what the server is for. A clever name that needs explaining works for friends who already know you. For strangers, a name that states the topic does more.
Discord's rules and limits
Length. A server name must be 2 to 100 characters long, not counting leading and trailing spaces.
Discovery. If you want the server listed in Server Discovery later, Discord's Discovery Guidelines require a server name and description that accurately describe the server and are free of profanity. Discovery also has other requirements, such as at least 1,000 members and a server age of at least 8 weeks, but the name rule is the one to respect from day one, since renaming an established server is more disruptive than picking well at the start.
Other people's rights. The same guidelines ask servers to respect intellectual property and only use content they own or have a license to use. For a fan server built around a game or a brand, make it clear in the name or description that the server is a community, not the official one.
Custom invite link. Servers at Server Boost Level 3 can set a custom invite link such as discord.gg/yourname. It allows up to 25 characters, only lowercase letters, numbers and dashes, and the address you want may already be taken. Discord Support cannot check availability in advance, and the link is lost 30 days after the server stops having the boosts to keep it. If you expect to get there, check that a short form of your name fits these rules.
A simple way to find a name
1. Write down three facts: the topic (a game, a skill, a place, a hobby), the audience (beginners, a region, a language, a school), and the tone (casual, competitive, professional).
2. Combine them in plain patterns. Topic plus function, such as a game name plus "LFG" or "Builders". Audience plus topic, such as a city plus "Board Gamers". Topic plus a word for a gathering place, such as "Study Hall", "Workshop" or "Lounge". Plain patterns are easy to understand and easy to search for.
3. Cut words. Remove every word that does not help a stranger understand the server. Shorter names are easier to say in voice chat, to type into a search and to fit into a custom invite link.
4. Avoid decoration that hurts readability. Long runs of symbols, emoji or mixed capitals make a name harder to read and to search for, even where Discord allows them.
Test the name before you commit
Say the name out loud once: if people in voice chat would have to spell it, simplify it. Search for it on the web and in Discord to see whether an existing community, game or company already uses something very close; a near-identical name confuses new members and can raise the intellectual property issue above.
Ask a few people who are not in the server what they think it is about, based on the name alone. If their answer does not match your topic, the name is not doing its job yet.
If you plan to promote the server elsewhere, check whether matching social media handles are still free before you announce the name.
Changing the name later
You can change the name at any time. Open Server Settings, where Discord takes you straight to the Server Profile tab, edit the Name field at the top and press Save Changes. Discord's own advice when creating a server is not to feel pressured to perfect it at the start, because name and icon can be updated later.
When you rename an active server, announce it in advance and explain the reason, so members do not think they joined the wrong place.
The name works together with the icon, banner and description on the server profile. Server themes and aesthetics covers the visual side.

Discord's documentation does not describe a uniqueness requirement for server names; each server is identified by its own ID. Custom invite links are different: the address you want can already be taken.
Discord's Discovery Guidelines ask servers to respect intellectual property. If your server is a fan community, make that clear so it is not mistaken for the official one.
Lowercase letters, numbers and dashes, up to 25 characters. Custom invite links are available at Server Boost Level 3.
