Servers reach Level 1 with 2 boosts, Level 2 with 7 and Level 3 with 14. Each level adds emoji, sticker and soundboard slots, better audio and more. Additional perks like Server Tags cost 3 separate boosts each. If a level is lost, perks stay for a 72-hour grace period.
How Server Boosting works
Server Boosts are applied to a server by its members. The number of active boosts decides the server's level, and each level adds a bundle of perks for everyone in the server. Nitro subscribers get 2 Server Boosts to apply to any server, plus a 30% discount on further boost purchases. Nitro Classic subscribers get the 30% discount, and Nitro Basic subscribers get neither a discount nor boosts.
A boost can be moved to another server, but after using it you have to wait through a 7-day cooldown before transferring it. When a boost moves away, the original server may lose a level or an additional perk that depended on it.
The figures in this article follow Discord's Server Boosting FAQ as of September 2026. Discord changes perks from time to time, so check the FAQ before planning around a specific number.
Level perks at 2, 7 and 14 boosts
Level 1 (2 boosts): 50 extra emoji slots for a total of 100, 10 extra sticker slots for a total of 15, 16 extra soundboard slots for a total of 24, 128 Kbps audio quality, Go Live streams at 720p 60fps, a custom server invite background and an animated server icon.
Level 2 (7 boosts): everything in Level 1, plus 50 more emoji slots for a total of 150, 15 more sticker slots for a total of 30, 12 more soundboard slots for a total of 36, 256 Kbps audio quality, Go Live streams at 1080p 60fps, a Stage audience capacity of 150 with video or Go Live, a 50MB upload limit for all members in this server, custom role icons and a static server banner.
Level 3 (14 boosts): everything in Levels 1 and 2, plus 100 more emoji slots for a total of 250, 30 more sticker slots for a total of 60, 12 more soundboard slots for a total of 48, 384 Kbps audio quality, a Stage audience capacity of 300 with video or Go Live, a 100MB upload limit for all members in this server, a Custom Invite Link and an animated server banner.
The Custom Invite Link replaces the random invite code with a readable address. It only works while at least one text channel is visible to @everyone, and setting one makes the server joinable by anyone who has the link. The emoji management guide covers how to use the extra emoji slots well.
Additional perks use separate boosts
Besides levels, some perks can be bought directly with boosts, with no level required. Server Tags give members a 4-character tag they can show on their profile, and Enhanced Role Styles add gradient and holographic effects to roles. Each costs 3 boosts. Game Server Hosting is listed at 3 or more boosts.
These boosts are counted separately from the ones that hold your level. New boosts are applied to levels automatically whenever there are enough for the next level, so you may need to move boosts back from a level before you can enable an additional perk. Additional perks can only be enabled and configured in the desktop app, and they are switched off immediately when their boosts are removed.
Example from Discord's FAQ: with 10 boosts you could hold Level 2 with 7 and use 3 for one additional perk, or hold Level 1 with 2 and use 6 for two additional perks.
What happens when boosts drop
When a server loses enough boosts to fall below a level, it keeps that level's perks for a grace period of 72 hours. After that, perks such as the banner and extra emoji are not deleted, but they become temporarily invalid until the level is reached again.
The Custom Invite Link is the exception: without the boosts to keep it, it is lost after 30 days and can be claimed by another server. Additional perks have no grace period at all and turn off as soon as their boosts are gone.
Because boosts come from individual members, a single person transferring or cancelling can move a server across a threshold. If a perk matters to your server, do not plan it around the exact minimum number of boosts.
Keeping track of boosts and boosters
Admins with the Manage Server permission get a Server Boosts tab at the top of the channel list. It shows the total and available boosts, how they are allocated, the current level and the active perks, and it lets you move boosts between levels and additional perks.
To get a message whenever someone boosts, open Server Settings > Overview, go to System Messages Channel, pick a channel and enable Send a message when someone Boosts this server.
Members who boost automatically receive the Server Booster role. It cannot be deleted, and you cannot add or remove members from it by hand, but you can change its color and style and give it permissions, for example access to a booster lounge.
If you want the current boost count visible in the channel list, BuildMyDiscord's Server Stats feature (Pro plan) adds a stats category with a channel whose name shows the server's boost count.
Thanking boosters without creating pay-to-play
Boosting is a voluntary contribution, so recognition works better than pressure. The Server Booster role is the simplest tool: a visible color, a small extra channel or early looks at announcements are common ways to say thanks.
Keep the core of the server open to everyone. If important discussions, help or events sit behind the booster role, members who cannot or do not want to pay are pushed out of the community you are trying to build. For more ideas on paid features in general, see the community monetization guide.
